The oldest town on Cape Cod was settled by sixty families from Saugus with permission from the Plymouth Colony. The area was ideal due to its marshes. In the 19th century, the town became known for its glassmaking production – the Boston and Sandwich Glass Company was one of the largest glass factories in the country. The historic Main Street features the Sandwich Glass Museum, Shawme Pond as the Village Green, boutique shops, restaurants, and nearby Sandwich Boardwalk and Heritage Museums and Gardens. The Cape Cod Canal borders, the northside with a busy marina, bike path, and waterfront restaurants.
